Hostile Water Mobs

This will host a small set of hostile water mobs.  Each will have unique behavior and drops.  Some will vary in appearence and behavior by Biome.

River Guardians

A smaller, weaker version of the Monument Guardian that sometimes drops fishing loot.   They spawn in rivers, ocean bottoms, lakes and ponds, and flooded caves.

There are four species of River Guardian which each have their own habitats, prey preferences, and level of aggression.  River guardians are territorial and will fight other river guardians, especially of a different species, to the death except when it is raining.  They will also attack larger creatures who intrude into their territory.   As of release 1.0.0.9, Iron Golems will now kill river golems if they can.

River Guardians have a ruddy hide with yellow spines.  They spawn in temperate water.  They hunt cod, squid and small creatures like pigs, chickens, rabbits, and children in or near water.

Icy River Guardians are ice blue with reddish spines.  They spawn in cold water.  They hunt salmon, squid and like chickens, rabbits, and children in or near water.  Icy River Guardians are the least aggressive species of river guardian.

Fiery River Guardians spawn in warm or hot water.  They hunt cod, squid, chickens, rabbits, and children in or near water..  They are the most aggressive river guardian.

Albino River Guardians spawn in deep, dark areas and hunt cod, child zombies, and bats near water.  They are more aggressive than river guardians but less aggressive than fiery river guardians.

Loot

River Guardians drop fish meat, occasionally fishing loot trash or treasure, and River Guardian Scales.

River Guardian Scales can be used by Modpack Designers to implement custom quests and recipes.  They can also be crafted into Prismarine Scales or smelted into purple dye.

Slippery Biters

These small to medium size hostile fish spawn in temperate and warm wet areas, around sunken ruins and ships, and rarely in swamps.  They are solitary normally but will defend each other when attacked.  They are aggressive towards players who get too close.  They chatter their teeth and so they can often be heard before they are seen.

They may also rarely spawn in a larger, slightly more dangerous form.  They do modest damage and are more of a hazard than a threat in small numbers.  You know they are in the area by their biting chittering sounds.

Special Attack

Slippery Biters are slow swimmers but they have the ability to suddenly slip behind players from a short distance away without warning.  This can cause a small easy fight into a serious threat if there are other Slippery Biters in the nearby area.   As of release 1.0.0.9, they have a short cooldown between uses of this ability.

As of release 1.0.0.9, Iron Golems will now kill Slippery Biters if they can.

Loot

Slippery Biters drop fish meat, occasionally fishing junk, and rarely drop fishing treasures.  They also drop Slippery Biter Glands, and Slippery Biter Scales.

Slippery Biter Scales can be used by Modpack Designers to implement custom quests and recipes.  The scales can also be crafted into Prismarine Scales or smelted into light blue dye.  Slippery Biter Glands provide a short range random teleport similar but not identical to to chorus fruit as well as providing some nutrition.

Gurty

Gurties

The Gurty is a small to medium medium size spiny amphibian creature.  Gurties are mildly aggressive in bright light and aggressive in the dark and the rain.  Before they become angry, gurties will sometimes make warning noises to scare off those approaching.  When a gurty becomes angry, parts of their body begin to glow from within and spines deploy from their back.  The spines do thorn damage to melee attackers when deployed.   Note: It is difficult but possible to sneak up behind a gurty without them becoming angry!

Habitat

Gurties normally inhabit Beaches and Swamps.  But, less Frequently, they are found near rivers and ponds.  Sometimes they are found in flooded caves.

Habits

Gurties move slower on land and are quite agile in water.   They spend their days playing and hunting in the water, often scouring the bottom for a while and then rising to the surface for a while.   At night they wander both on land and in the water.   Gurties will likely look different (and maybe behave a little differently) in desert/savanna, cold biomes, underground caves.

Nesting
Gurties are nesting creatures.  Their nests look like a clump of dense brown grass.   Fishing loot will drop from nests.  Gurties return to their nest periodically and usually just before dusk and just after dawn.  Gurties will pursue and kill anything they see close to their nests that doesn't escape.  When they die, the nest crumbles and fades.

Combat

By default, Gurties deal moderate damage and have moderate hit points.  But their thick hides and rubbery protective layers provide them significant damage reduction to damage from explosions and projectiles.  They are immune to poison and have a weak poisonous bite.  Gurties deal a small amount more damage in the water.  Iron Golems instinctively hate Gurties even tho villagers have learned a secret trick that prevents gurties from ever attacking villagers.  Gurties ignore wandering traders too but can be hard on Llama's.

Loot

Gurty's drop leather, a foul uncooked rotten flesh, a tasty pork like meat when they burn to death, an edible gland that can be consumed to gain a half minute's water breathing, and gurty guts- which are custom quest/ingredient items and also can be crafted into string.

Poisonous Watersnakes

These small to medium size hostile green snakes spawn near ponds, rivers, and swamps.  They are solitary.  Their hides can be combined to make leather.

Watersnakes prefer to keep their distance and spit poison.  The poison spit does have a kick-- very mild melee damage that can finish a severely weakened foe off.

However, Watersnakes do also have a poisonous bite that does solid melee damage.

Loot

Watersnakes drop scale hide that can be crafted into a small piece of leather, Four of these can be combined into a normal piece of leather.   In a later release, they will drop poisonous fangs that can be crafted into a poisonous melee weapon.

Misc Mod Options

In modded minecraft, you may notice that certain normal mobs disappear in a modded environment.  The reasons for this are technical but this mod has some options to restore certain mobs to a more normal frequency.  The essence is that if minecraft only has 1 mob in an area, they will give it a weight of 1 instead of the 20/50/100 they give it when there are multiple mobs.  This means even if you add one new mob with a weight of 20, the normal mobs go from being 100% common to being 4% common.  This mod increases the spawn rates for cod, salmon, dolphin, and squid closer to normal.   This part is a work in progress and within a few days there will be a way to disable it.  But it was working very well in test.

This same code also gives the option to restore zombified piglin as a common feature and ghasts as a less common feature of all nether biomes as they used to be.   You can set this to a "0" now to disable these nether spawns. The default for nether will be set to 0 as of the fall 2021 release.  It's been replaced by "Spawn Biome Utility".

This feature will be enhanced to allow controlling the desired spawn rate for biome categories with overrides for specific biomes for any mob.  It may be broken out as a separate mod once it reaches a certain size (except for the four default fish which will remain in the hostile water monsters mod).  This new mod will be called Spawn Balance Utility.

This feature also adds *small* numbers of cod to rivers and swamps which makes them a bit more lifelike.   They are few enough that it should have no performance impact.
