Cannot pick block through portal

When I am in the nether, I can right click through the portal to place blocks just fine. However, if I middle click through the portal, I do not get the block I was looking at; I have to go through the portal in order to do so. I'm playing on snapshot 20w12a on a new superflat singleplayer world.
