I've somehow completely missed you were talking about 1.21.8. I can spare you the wait, 1.21.8 won't be supported.
I see no benefit in me spending days porting to a version that was effectively outdated on arrival, just for me then having to throw all the work I did out and start from scratch because Mojang decided to experiment with their render engine, happily changing whatever they want, whenever they want.
I think that the changes they make are needed, but as long as this transition to a new render engine continues, it's just not worth my time porting.
So I do not plan to port to any version prior to 1.22.1, hoping that's enough time for them to settle on something decent.
It seems like the mod's been abandoned, as there's been no activity for almost a year

I respect the stance of IPortalTeam, but honestly at this height i doubt Mojang will ever release a new major version anytime soon. Maybe the infamous "End Update" that is conjured time to time by fans, but guessing of the current trend of rapid releasing small updates but with new content to keep the hype (specially with vanilla and bedrock playerbase), they will keep bumping the third digit up to 100 and counting.
And like a modder said in the Fabric server, better to at least "hop" across versions (like, not updating to each drop, but let's say once per year) than to wait for a major version nobody at mojang ever promised will exist and need to bridge a huge technical gap between the versions you choose to skip over.
