I was just wondering if it is possible to get lighting working through portals as it would be much easier to make them seamless.

Not possible currently. Because this feature is hard to implement because the portal can be very big or tilted.
You can put lighting blocks behind the portal or use dark-colored blocks to make it seamless

You could also install a Fullbright mod, that helps a bit, and if you want it to be completely seamless (this part is not recommended) turn off smooth lighting
