layer armors like they do in real life
i.e. combine them in a crafting table
leather+plate or leather+chainmail+plate
durability, armor points, toughness all added together
enchant-ability is the highest of any given armors used to craft the layered version
gives purpose to leather other than merely being a skipped stepping stone and makes chainmail no longer merely a collectible.
to properly see the armor points and toughness I advise using a couple of overlay mods that provide this utility and already exist on curse forge.
