Using 1.7.10. Same behavior reproduced on later versions too, but that was years ago, not sure if it gets fixed.

To reproduce:

• Bind the key to a mouse key, say middle mouse button
• Click on it, nothing happens
• Press any keyboard keys
• Item placed

That's to say, you have to fire a keyboard press after the mouse key is pressed, or it won't place the item.
