The channel can be set by shift-right clicking in the air to get a GUI for selecting the channel.
Also, possibly set channel by shift-right clicking with the item on a transmitter or receiver in world.
Also also, possibly maybe, allow shift-scrolling with item in hand to select from a list of named saved channels.
