Trailer
Villagers
The desperate alliance of villagers and illagers who have banded together to protect their home against invaders. Villager ingenuity combined with illager militarism make for a formidable army of warriors and spellcasters backed by farmers, builders and craftsmen. Transform the humble village into a fortress!
Monsters
The previously wild and untamed creatures of the overworld now brought together by mysterious forces. Raise the dead from graveyards, hatch spiders from nests and more. Monsters shun sunlight and can only safely venture outside at night, but once night falls, they should be feared just as they have been for ages past.
Piglins
The denizens of the nether who have come through portals to expand their empire. Piglins can only build on nether terrain, but wherever they expand the overworld is transformed into a visage of their home, turning grass into nylium and stone into netherrack. Conquer the overworld and let none stand in your way!
Playing a game
To start a match, press F12 to go into RTS camera and use the top-right buttons to place your starting workers.
A match ends when all but one player is defeated. A player is defeated when all of their buildings are destroyed or they surrender.

Tutorial
If you're brand new to the RTS genre, you may want to start by playing the single player tutorial. The reign_of_nether_tutorial map included in the downloads will get you started on how to play an RTS game and all the basics of the mod. This map was generated using the mod datapack so it already includes ore resources and friendly world generation.
Download it here: https://edge.forgecdn.net/files/5816/810/reign_of_nether_tutorial.zip
Worldgen Datapack
The reign_of_nether_datapack datapack is included to let you generate worlds with:
1. No caves or underground structures, to prevent your units falling in holes and not being able to escape
2. Ores generated on the surface, so that workers can gather them
3. Restricted biome generation as some biomes like extreme hills and jungles are really hard to play in
4. 4x normal tick speed for farming and tree decay
5. No insomnia (to prevent phantoms bothering RTS players)
6. No rain or snow (looks really bad in RTS mode)
Download it here: https://edge.forgecdn.net/files/5816/813/reign_of_nether_datapack.zip
A good seed to use for your first game is: 4756899154123723533, at coordinates: -3000 80 -1000 (this is the same one used for the tutorial map).
You can use /worldborder center <x> <z> and /worldborder set <radius> to limit the map size. This ensures buildings and units stay within the map borders and avoids situations where some player decides to hide a base miles away from everyone else.
Installation
1. Install Forge 1.19.2: https://files.minecraftforge.net/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.19.2.html
2. Download and add the Reign of Nether mod jar file to your Minecraft mods folder
3. Launch Minecraft, selecting your installation as Forge 1.19.2
4. Download the datapack
5. When you create a new world, add the datapack zip to it
When installing on a server, it's recommended to use these server.properties settings:
- view-distance=25
- spawn-monsters=false
- spawn-npcs=false
- spawn-protection=0
- gamemode=spectator
Experimental: Fog of War
By using the command /rts-fog enable/disable you can toggle fog of war for all players on the server. This means that all chunks not within immediate range of your units and buildings are greyed out, and all mobs and block updates are not seen until you go to explore them. This is a staple of classic RTS games, but this mod has unfortunately seen many bugs and performance issues related to it, and so it has been labelled experimental.
Tips for improving performance:
- Optifine is not compatible! Enabling it with it installed will crash the game
- Don't enable or disable it in the middle of a match
- Reduce your chunk render distance
Known bugs and limitations
- Enabling fog of war while Optifine is installed will crash the game
- Enemy bases in fog of war sometimes show their shadows
- While you can play this mod with vanilla players in survival, it's not balanced for them at all
- Unless you have a beast of a server CPU, playing with 4 or more players in the same match will likely cause a lot of lag when you all get full armies, be prepared!
- Mod hotkeys are currently not rebindable
- Macs have issues with the title screen and GUI resizing
- No teams
