Second Chance
"Second Chance" makes a small change to the player's health to prevent you from being one-shot out of nowhere.
If you have 7+ hearts, fatal damage will leave you with a half heart instead of killing you straight away. This gives you a moment to react to powerful mobs which will otherwise instantly kill you.
Note that this will not apply to fall damage, falling blocks, or void damage.
This mod is inspired by the Second Chance ability from Kingdom Hearts.
The Focus Band from Pokemon works in a similar way.
Update v1.1.0: The Second Chance benefit now applies to wolves, parrots, cats, villagers, axolotls, horse mounts, snow golems, and iron golems. The exact threshold varies with each mob. Now your pets should be a bit sturdier!
Update v1.2.0: Second Chance now comes with a config file! So if you've got mods installed which change the health of affected entities, you may wish to adjust the second chance threshold to balance. Remember that lower thresholds mean Second Chance is more likely to activate.
Update v1.2.1: Second Chance is updated to 1.18-pre6 and now has much more flexible configuration so it can now include modded mobs. If you're updating from 1.2.0 please delete the existing second-chance.properties file before loading a world. Once a world is loaded, you can add, remove, and edit mobs in second_chance_config.json. You can change your player health threshold in second-chance.properties as usual. If you disable "enable-config-updates" then the config file will remain fixed and will not automatically update when new versions of second chance are released.
