Step assist cannot be turned off

I crafted myself a full exo suit. Now it pushes me 5+ blocks in front of any obstacle, including my home which I have to sneak into (and then keep hitting the ceiling all the time). There's that button in the HUD, which says to disable/enable step assist, but it doesn't seem to change this behavior at all. Am I doing something wrong?
Maybe step assist is not something that I think it is? The exo suit executes a full 6-block-high jump with a "push" sound near any 1 or more blocks higher (or less than 1 block, a bed for example) in front of movement direction, regardless of movement assist setting. If I take off pants & boots, I do normal 1-block jumps in such cases. I'm looking for a way to disable the exo suit jumping boosts without taking parts off (as I still want to have the speed & mining boosts).
UPD: no, it's not any other mod, it was the auto-jump setting. xD I guess it might be better to be mentioned somewhere (wiki?) that step assist works better with auto jump turned off.

It can be turned off, look in the controls menu there will be the key to turn it on/off, if you have other mod that use the same key, change it cuz it's might be the cause
