the game throws a ClassCastException. the shearing appears to have happened after loading the game after the crash. the xp doesn't go through, however.

to reproduce, just use a kama to shear a sheep.

Can confirm this bug. It occurs both in single-player and multiplayer. In MP, the server is unaffected and other players can see the wool drop after shearing.
