There's a new Preference Category in town: one for the Townies themselves!
As a result your Sim will get special buffs in the presence of those NPCs, special interactions with those NPCs, and special interactions with other Sims (which may depend on how those Sims feel about those NPCs).
Many of the interactions are available ONLY in the proximity of the NPCs. When these controversial figures show up, suddenly a Sim's stance on them naturally becomes much more of an issue. That means these options won't be cluttering up your menus at other times, because who really wants to go on a date with some gal who just wants to talk about Knox Greenburg all the time?
