What do the checkmarks in the tooltip mean?

See title. I looked for an explanation of the tooltip, but could not find any.
What does it mean if for an item there are listed several other items, some with checkmark and some with "X"?
This checkmark means you have collected something.
This checkmark means you have NOT collected something.
This checkmark can usually be found on quests and it means that you have completed this on another character on your account but not on the character you are currently playing.
The last one can also be found on items if you have +Sources settings disabled for Appearances. I will explain later why I have it turned on.
As 1 appearance can have multiple sources (meaning, two different items obtained from two different activities, 1 being a quest and 1 being a boss drop) they are listed in the tooltip of an item.
Example:
This appearance is shared across 9 different items. Obtained through different methods but they all have same in-game appearance when you equip/transmog them. Out of all 9, I have collected 2. And you can see 2 checkmarks. I am yet to obtain the rest of them. That's with having +Sources turned on because I aim to obtain ALL of them eventually.
When you DO obtain all different items that have same appearance, it will look like this:
However, if you are playing in Unique mode, it only matters to you if you get 1 appearance. Rest of them will be shown as Blue Encircled as you already have 1.
I had the same issue last night and I pestered some people to explain this to me without realizing that I was playing in wrong mode.
Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. I have just one additional question:
This appearance is shared across 9 different items. Obtained through different methods but they all have same in-game appearance when you equip/transmog them. Out of all 9, I have collected 2.
When the appearances are the same, the addon can't track this by appearances, right? So does it track it by items in your bank? Or does the game actually remember which item you ever got, even if you vendor it?
