Fortuna Dice Roller

Fortuna Dice Roller

Description

This addon is a dice roller for the Fortuna dice system devised by the guild First Light of Moon Guard. It is also capable of serving as a generic d20 dice roller.

It is capable of sending rolls to the console, say, party chat, raid chat, and to the communication channels created by the Cross RP addon (if installed), so it will be very useful to game masters of cross-faction groups on roleplay servers. (Cross RP is for RP servers only).

User interface

Once installed, the command /fdr will display the window. Alternately, FDR also has LibDataBroker support; it can be added to an LDB display addon like TitanPanel.

The LDB control will toggle the main UI and display the last dice roll in a tooltip when moused over. (Depending on your LDB display addon, you'll either see a blue d10 or the text "FDR").

Usage

The "d20" tab is the default. This is a basic dice roller that is suitable for most variations of tabletop RPGs and many custom guild dice systems. It will roll a specified number of dice and add a specified modifier to that roll, then display the results in the selected output channel. This mode uses standard d20 notation: 2d6 to roll a pair of six-sided dice with no modifier (common in board games) or 5d6+7 to roll five six-sided dice and add a modifier of 7.

Rolls in this mode have a minimum of 1. It is possible to roll dice that can't exist in the real world (e.g. d5).

The Fortuna tab enables special roll rules. This mode is intended for First Light but has no encoded guild restrictions on its use. Roll strings are similar to standard d20 notation, but a difficulty can be specified for automatic efficacy calculation. Some examples (note that, for now, a modifier must always be specified to do a difficulty check; a modifier of 0 is effectively a "naked" roll):

  • To roll a d20 with no modifier or difficulty check: 1d20
  • To roll a d20 and add a difficulty check of 15: 1d20+11v15
  • To roll a d20 without any modifier but with a difficulty check: 1d20v15

Note that Fortuna is d20-based, but FDR will faithfully execute the Fortuna rules if you were to specify, say, ten-sided dice instead.

Under the Fortuna rules, a critical failure (1) or success (number of sides on a die: 20 on a d20) will cause FDR to roll again and add (success) or subtract (failure) the result from the original roll. Further success or failure will trigger additional rolls. Once all of these "explosion" or "implosion" rolls are calculated, the specified modifier is added or subtracted. Because of this, Fortuna rolls can have a negative outcome; this is called a botched roll. Bad things will happen!

Fortuna rules also allow the invocation of aspects or fate points (see the rules for more details and ask your GM when you can use them). To do this in Fortuna Dice Roller, simply specify more than one die:

  • With one aspect/fate point invoked: 2d20+5
  • With two aspect/fate points invoked, a modifier, and a difficulty check: 3d20+8v15

Game masters for Fortuna games: please contact me if anything doesn't look right in this mode.

Settings tab: The output mode selected here determines where FDR will display its output. If you are a game master wishing to do a hidden roll that your players won't see, use the Console option to display output in your chat window.

FDR has the ability to display output in Cross RP's custom RP1-RP9 channels if you have it installed. If these options don't show up in the output dropdown menu, make sure that Cross RP is enabled. FDR knows when Cross RP's relay is turned on and will prompt you to enable it if it is disabled.

There is an option for an abbreviated (simplified) output mode that displays only the final result. The verbose mode is selected by default and will display the result of each roll, the modifier added, and (in Fortuna mode) any implosion or explosion rolls triggered.

All options, the position/state of the FDR window, and roll strings entered should be remembered across sessions.

Help tab: The help tab contains a few formatting reminders for Fortuna users.
