This mod adds prehistoric trees, plants, mobs and dimensions! Complex varied generation methods are used and the mod's content is huge. The mod works standalone, but can also be integrated into the Fossils and Archeology Revival mod via CraftTweaker: details are lower down.


v.52.0: Your Dimensions are now in separate mods, not inside the main mod. Look lower down for details.

You are strongly advised to install Just Enough Items (JEI) to be able to get to grips with the extensive mod contents, which are only sketched below. I don't know how someone would play this mod without it! And a mod such as Here's What You're Looking At would be very helpful to allow you to know what the hundreds of blocks and mobs all are that you encounter. Most mod-content is now explained for you in the mod's own internal guidebook, the Palaeopedia. For any other help, drop into our Discord.

MOD INTERCOMPATIBILITY:
Not compatible with Not Enough IDs. Because of the amount of content now added, you are highly likely to require the mod Just Enough IDs if you need to extend the amount of IDs available. CAUTION: JEID itself is not compatible with OTG and RTG terrain generators for extending Biome IDs above 256, so you may not be able to build a pack using both RTG/OTG and very large mods like Prehistoric Nature. See lower down for the information about the prehistoric dimensions. If JEID causes a startup crash you may also need to add the mod Mixin Bootstrap.
VanillaFix appears to want to interfere with AI in this mod, but issues are intermittent and the mod may be acceptable in some installations.
If you are using FoamFix (which is highly recommended), be sure to use the latest version as earlier versions broke several block models.
I have also discovered that the mod Surge blocks mob movements and AI, so that can't be used.

WARNING Updating from a version older than v.51.0: Before installing the update make sure to not have stored in your pre-existing world animals in buckets, eggs and egg phials, envelopes of spores, seeds, nest blocks and animal DNA (if you are using the DNA/FA compat mod). Due to several new and improved features coming with these update those items will be permanently deleted from your world if you were to load the mod with them in. You should make sure that animals are spawned, blocks placed, and these are not stored in "item form" when updating. Finally your old config file will not work. The config has now been split into two files, each names starting prehistoric_nature_ . Find what you need and make your changes in the new configs.


LAG:
The latest update could appear to be a little laggy for you. Assign at least 4GB of RAM to play this mod. If you are using a modpack, you will need more. These JVM arguments will optimise things and hopefully sort out a lot of lag. These allocate 4GB of RAM but if you want more, change the first 4 to a higher number. GENERAL GAMEPLAY SUMMARY (mod v.52.0 onward):
Harvest fossils from the overworld, or trade with a Palaeontolost or Palaeobotanist for them.
Break the fossils with a geologic pick to obtain raw fossils from the various time-periods (or trade with a Palaeontolost or Palaeobotanist for them).
Use the in-game revival process to revive the fossils into living things again (see the in-game Palaeopedia book for instructions).
Craft a bone wand and apply the Enchantment of Time Reversal to the wand.
Propagate the plants using their own methods to multiply them (see the Palaeopedia for more on this).
If you rejuvenate certain plants, certain blocks from them can be used to construct portals to the past dimensions: construct the portals from the blocks required for them and open the portal with an enchanted bone wand.
Find a Palaeobotanist villager and trade with him until you obtain the Enchantment of Time Reversal (or get very lucky on the enchanting table and find it there) to apply to the bone wand.
In the dimensions you will encounter all the native prehistoric creatures, which can be collected, caught in cages or buckets or their eggs collected and brought back into the overworld to hatch. You can also collect lots more plants and propagatable materials while there, as well as lots lots of new blocks for building and gameplay enhancement.

DIMENSIONS:
For version 52.0 of the mod onwards we are issuing the prehistoric dimensions as separate mods which you need to install. This is because of the very low number of 256 biome IDs available to mod with in Minecraft 1.12.2. In order to allow players to still play the mod and keep the biome IDs under the limit, players can opt not to make dimensions available. Keeping the number of biomes low will mean that players can continue to use OTG and RTG worlds. However, if you do want to add all the Prehistoric dimensions, you will probably need to add the mod JEID, as detailed in the section above (MOD INTERCOMPATIBILITY). All the blocks, items, entities, and everything you could want are still in the main mod. The dimension mods only include the actual dimensions and their worldgen. In any case though, the dimensions are a major part of our mod and we think they're the best, most interesting and beautiful dimensions which currently exist in Minecraft in any version at all (!) so you are strongly encouraged to install them and enjoy them. The dimension mods are available here:

Notes on mob spawning:
The mod config has options to bring in default spawns into the custom dimensions. It also has the option to bring in spawns from the Fossils and Archeology mod and the Jurassic World Reborn mod if you have them installed. There are also some custom spawners in the config which you could configure manually to bring in mods from any other mod you choose in any biomes you want.
The spawners will not constantly spawn new mobs: they generate mobs during world-gen of a chunk and once they are dead they are dead, and no more will spawn in that chunk.
No extra rules are applied about mobs de-spawning. Mobs in THIS mod will not despawn though.
There is a mob-respawner item in the mod which can be used to spawn in native vanilla or modded mobs to their biome if used by a player. This item can be disabled in the config.

Notes on plants and world-gen:
By default the mod's plants will only generate in the custom dimensions. If you want the plants to generate in the overworld, there is a config option to enable that (genAllPlants). All plants can be further configured in detail and each has its own config paragraph in the plants config file.
If you are experiencing unwanted blocks/plants/structures/mobs from other mods in the custom dimensions, you will need to disable them in their own mods' configs. If they do not give you the option, you can try using InControl mod for blocking entities, but for blocks I can't help further: other modders should not code to aggressively generate into non-overworld dimensions.

Notes on mobs:
Some mobs will attack other mobs. Some will attack you. Almost none of them attack anything unless they need to regain health though. If you want to have mobs attacking other mobs then reduce their health a bit. There is a config setting you can alter for determining at what level of health they attack.
There is also a config setting to cause mobs to always attack players regardless of their health (if they are the kind that would do so).
Mobs cannot be pulled through portals: you can only bring back items from the dimensions to spawn them with.

Notes on Fossils and Archeology Revival mod integration:
As of v.52.0, Prehistoric Nature is fully standalone with its own revival system, but if you want to integrate Prehistoric Nature into a modpack using the using the Fossils and Archeology machinery for revival, you can do that by installing the CraftTweaker mod and this addin mod and following its own instructions: Prehistoric Nature Integration

Notes on reproducing creatures:
Most water and amphibious creatures can be caught in a bucket provided they are small enough to fit (i.e. for large mobs you can only bucket babies) and plausibly would not be killed by it.
Land creatures can be caught in a cage provided they will fit (i.e. for large mobs you can only cage babies). Right click with an empty hand to pick up a cage with a mob in it. Break a cage to release the mob. Small mobs may wriggle out between the bars if you do not pick the cage up. Prehistoric Nature mobs will not age in cages.
Insects and some very small lizards can be collected in a glass jar. When they are frozen in the jar they will drop full-body items, whereas killing them normally will just give you parts. See the Paleopedia for more information.
Breed creatures to have them lay eggs or give birth. Some mobs require a nest to lay into. Some create their own nest mounds on suitable ground. Some lay in water. Some lay into mosses or rotten wood. Some just drop egg items. See the Palaeopedia for details on each mob.

Notes on reproducing static creatures:
Static creatures can be collected with shears.
Stromatolites, Reefs and similar require a silk-touch pick axe to harvest.

Prehistoric Ground and Ground Cover
Prehistoric ground cover blocks can be harvested or crafted.
Sandy variants must be near water to sustain themselves.
The grounds will spread to neighbouring dirt, sand or stone blocks as appropriate.
Bonemealing prehistoric grounds will give a variety of small ground cover plants, ferns or moss which can be sheared and replaced elsewhere for decoration.

Thatch
Thatch can be crafted from various materials. It can be placed flat or angled and has a connected texture. Note that the hitbox for the angled version is small and centred on the thatch's frame.

Resin
Resin is extracted from several trees, based on what would produce it in real life. You can configure the trees in the config file if needed.
Construct a resin extractor machine and place this up against a tree trunk. The tree must be large enough. The extractor will slowly fill, and produces a redstone comparator output according to how full it is. To get hold of the resin, right-click the machine with a glass bottle or bucket.
